We need to embrace the idea of government in the sunshine. I have repeatedly urged both the Asheville City Council and the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners to adopt the principles of Florida’s Sunshine Law which is considered the model for such rules nationwide.
As a reporter I was all too aware of the excessive use of closed sessions and meetings at which less than a quorum of government legislators met to discuss matters of public policy. (During the secret water discussions between city and county leaders I actually forced cancellation of some meetings by announcing that I intended to be present as a reporter.) We deserve better.
